Engineered Fibers Technology and Schmitt Fibristics Sign Technical Fibers European Representation Agreement

Shelton, CT July 14, 2014 Engineered Fibers Technology (EFT)is pleased to announce the signing of a technical fibers representation agreement between EFT and Schmitt Fibristics, Wuppertal, Germany.

This new agreement is a significant addition to EFT's efforts to increase export sales and technical support for its entire precision cut and fibrillated technical fibers business segment into a broader spectrum of European markets, including wet-laid papers / nonwovens, short fiber composites, molding compounds and other engineered materials.

Dr. Michael Schmitt, founder of Schmitt Fibristics, has a wealth of industrial and technical fiber experience, including 15 years at Teijin Aramid GmbH. Since 1998 he worked in the department QEF (friction, sealing, paper) of Teijin Aramid GmbH (former Teijin Twaron GmbH) in Wuppertal, Germany. From 2004 till 2013 he was responsible for the new business development area as Senior Business Development Manager Business Incubation & Business Development promoting para-aramid for light weight design, acoustics and all other applications of para-aramid fibers and pulps, and was responsible for new business incubation and development of these fibers.

In 2013 he founded SCHMITT Fibristics, specialized in the consultancy and application of technical fibres as well as in the development of new products and markets providing creative solutions.

Engineered Fibers Technology and Cellusuede Products, Inc. Announce Strategic Partnership

SHELTON, CT February 27, 2014 Engineered Fibers Technology (EFT) announced today that Cellusuede Products, Inc. (Rockford, IL) has acquired a twenty-percent ownership in the company as the start of a new strategic partnership related to short-cut technical fibers, including new application and market development.

This new partnership brings significant strategic benefit to both companies including the ability to initiate programs which will combine their unique and complementary technical and manufacturing resources. This synergy will result in both the rapid development of new technical fiber markets, and the extension of existing markets with an emphasis on geographic and export expansion.

This partnership gives EFT access to additional cutting technology and capacity, expands product offerings, and permits additional market opportunities and customer introductions through Cellusuede, who will also serve as a sales agent to EFT in selected markets. The partnership expands Cellusuede‘s technical fiber business into new areas currently served by EFT.

Engineered Fibers Technology Exclusive: Specialty BioMid™ Short-Cut Cellulose Fibers

SHELTON, CT- October 4, 2013- Engineered Fibers Technology (EFT) announced today the signing of an agreement making EFT the exclusive supplier of eco-friendly BioMid™ Short-Cut Cellulosic fiber. Supplied in cut lengths from 0.25 mm to 75 mm, BioMid will be offered with finishes or coatings especially suited for technical grade paper, thermoplastic, thermoset molding compound and other engineered materials applications.

After five years of development, BioMid fiber was launched in 2012 by GS Consulting (Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada) and Engineered Natural Composites Corp. (ENC, Seoul, South Korea), but was only available as a continuous 900-filament yarn for textiles and other continuous yarn uses. BioMid fiber consists of extremely high crystalline cellulose filaments, each with a diameter of 11 microns. Gordon Shank, co-inventor of BioMid, states that BioMid fiber has a tenacity of 8.5 g/denier and a modulus of 350g/d. The highly uniform fiber also has a low specific gravity, on par with aramid or about half the weight of glass. He also added that the fiber's feedstock is wood chips generated as a by-product of the Lumber Industry, making it a fully sustainable fiber that does not compete with food croplands.

To meet the demands for this unique high strength fiber for use in thermoplastic molding compounds, rubbers, elastomers, and other engineered materials, as well as wet-laid technical papers, Engineered Fibers Technology has partnered with GS Consulting as the exclusive manufacturer of BioMid fibers in precision short-cut lengths, to offer a wider choice of fibers used in these applications. Fibers can be supplied either with a water dispersible finish for papermaking / slurry processing, or with various thermoplastic or thermoset compatible coatings with engineered strand integrity, to permit conveying and processing and to promote fiber / resin bonding. When BioMid fiber is used in conjunction with biodegradable resins such as PLA, a true bio-composite can be produced.

A very high degree of crystallinity permits the fiber to be processed at temperatures as high as 360°C (680°F). Many commercial thermoset and thermoplastic resin systems must be processed at temperatures exceeding 150°C (302°F), the point at which most other natural fibers degrade. BioMid fiber is a valuable option in laminating, molding and specialty paper situations where higher temperature processing or application would rule out the use of most other natural and some synthetic fibers.

Engineered Fibers Technology Acquires DensePakTM Obscurant and Short-Fiber Businesses from Advanced Fiber Technologies

October 15, 2012 - Engineered Fibers Technology (Shelton, CT) announced today that they have acquired the DensePakTM Obscurant and High Performance Short-Fiber Businesses of Advanced Fiber Technologies(Wilmington, DE). DensePakTM technology includes proprietary short fiber and packaging expertise used to manufacture obscurant devices employed by the U.S. Government as a defense against sophisticated electrooptical sensors and advanced weapon systems. AFT’s short-fiber business includes surface treatment / fiber coating technology for carbon, glass, aramid and other technical fibers to enhance electrical and / or mechanical performance in advanced composites and other engineered material applications.

The purchase includes all manufacturing and laboratory equipment, and inventory of AFT. It was also announced that the acquired equipment will be relocated to EFT's Shelton, CT facility, with the move expected to be completed by early 2013. Mr. Warren Schimpf, AFT President, will provide support for this relocation, as well as continue to provide long term technical and customer / business support.

AFT was established in 1996 to provide engineering, consulting, contract R&D and products, with about seventy-percent of sales in support of military/government programs, and is the recognized leader in obscurant development and production technologies. AFT previously announced the sale of their wafer technology, also used to produce obscurants, to General Dynamics-OTS, Orlando, FL., based on Mr. Schimpf’s decision to take early retirement.

HIGH PERFORMANCE SHORT-CUT AND STAPLE LENGTH PEI FIBERS / THERMAL BINDER FIBERS MADE FROM ULTEM RESIN

Shelton, CT, May 22, 2012 - Engineered Fibers Technology (EFT) announced today that they can now supply PEI fibers, spun from Ultem® resin by Kuraray Co. Ltd., in both precision short-cut and staple lengths to their U.S. customers. Short-cut fiber lengths of 0.5 to 75 mm can be provided in precision short cut form, and crimped stable length fibers from 38 to 106 mm are available. EFT can also supply fine denier circular cross-section fibers that have not previously been available. Deniers from 1.5 to 8 can be provided.

“Ultem resin based PEI fibers are a significant addition to our high performance technical fibers selections”, said Dave Merrill, Sales and Marketing Director,” and permit us to continue to provide unique solutions to meet the needs of specialty paper, nonwovens and engineered materials producers, and we look forward to working with Kuraray America in the development of these fibers.”

Ultem thermoplastic resins have high heat resistance, a continuous operating temperature of 180-200o C, are flame retardant with low smoke density and toxic gas generation, have good chemical resistance, and have been the resin of choice for such demanding applications as aircraft interiors. PEI fibers made using Ultem resin also have extremely low (0.3%) moisture absorption and excellent dyeability in a broad range of colors.

PEI short-cut and staple length fibers will permit a range of applications including aircraft and other commercial transportation fabrics and interior panels, electrical insulation papers, wire and cable wrap, liquid and gas filtration, thermal insulation and fire blockers, as well as safety and industrial protective gear, among others.

“Using PEI short-cut fiber in combination with longer glass or carbon fibers, wet-laid papers containing greater than 50% reinforcement fiber can be produced and then laminated / molded to produce stiff/ toughened composite laminates and panels that can be thermoformed.to produce three dimensional articles”, noted Robert Evans, EFT Managing Director.

In addition, amorphous PET/ PEI alloy thermal binder fibers, 2 denier, are available with a PEI:PES ratio of 75:25 for short-cut applications in conjunction with PEI fibers.

ENGINEERED FIBERS TECHNOLOGY (EFT)COMPLETES MOVE TO NEW LOCATION / EXPANDS CAPABILITIES

Shelton, CT, September 1, 2011-- Engineered Fibers Technology (EFT) announced that they have completed their move to a new facility at 88 Long Hill Cross Road, Shelton, CT. The new location provides for more efficient and expanded production facilities for their precision short-cut fiber operations and their customer support / R&D laboratory services.

EFT will be able to offer customers expanded capabilities for tow and filament preparation, cutting and packaging. New cutting rooms are set up specifically for processing carbon fibers and other technical fibers. EFT's expanded research and development laboratory facilities will devote equipment to customer support and applications development, as well as development of EFTecTM Nanofibrillated Fibers and SpectracarbTM Porous Carbon Gas Diffusion Media (GDM) materials. The new location also contains additional engineering office space and additional space as needed for future expansion.
